Abstrak
Agriculture is one of the development pillars of Bali.In doing the agricultural tasks the Balinese do believe on the religious guidance.The research question was how far the religious ceremony could support the sustainable agricultural development A field study was conducted in one village with the inhabitants of 1,205 persons of Selatpeken Village in Bangli Region.A depth interview and house to house visits to 25 farmers were conducted.The results found are as followings:1) agricultural task comprises of land preparation,planting paddy,nursery,and harvesting;2) in doing that there are nine steps of religious ceremonies conducted such as mendak toya(welcoming water),ngendagin(start to land preparation),mubuhang(fertilizing),muat emping(growing the herbs),melasah(flattening),nandur(planting),biukukung(blossoming),ngantukang nini(getting-in),mantenin(greeting);3) producing rice is considered as physical work as well as spiritual work;4) respecting soil,water,the seed as well as the god,indicating the Balinese believe on the supra-natural power;5) the old generation always ask the participation of young generation to involve by applying the apprenticeship principle.The Balinese as a farmer in doing their agricultural task should preceded by conducting ceremony,otherwise a failure will be faced.From ergonomic view point,the conclusion could be drawn are:1) the Balinese farmers are tightly held the best practice in agricultural tasks,such as the physical and spiritual aspect.It must be handed down to the young generation for the sake of sustainable agricultural development in Bali.For further study,it is recommended,to calculate exactly how much money and time is expended for the ceremonies in producing the intended products
