Abstrak
The countryside of panorama such as cliffs, ravines and rivers with clear water, rice terraced fields, and the atmosphere of a typical residential community of Ubud, continues to provide comfort and inspiration for every visitor including painters from outside Bali and abroad. In addition to personal communication verbally in the process of social interaction, the painter also distribute nonverbal messages and expressions of good feelings through media of communication such as; drawing paper, canvas, and others media. In this paper will focus on describing the existing situation, namely how foreign painter’s intercultural communication with the public (painters) locally in Ubud Bali? However, on the other hand, there are several questions that arise include; What factors led to foreign painters and local communities are still experiencing difficulties in Ubud to interaction and adaptation as a whole, and how the two intercultural community that address the differences in cultural background in everyday life living? This paper describes some of the realities that are happening, intercultural communication patterns of foreigners and local painters in Ubud Bali was influenced by streams that embrace painting by each painters. And in the integration, is also seen that they are able to adapt and be comformist against the majority culture, especially the local culture of Bali in Ubud associated with nature and the environments, beliefs and values prevailing in society. In this paper using the framework of intercultural communication theory, especially the idea that triggered by Judith N. Martin and Thomas K. Nakayama (Martin & Nakayama, 2004:272-275) examines the components that focus such as; assimilation, integration, separation and marginalization. This approach to facilitate the process of studying the problems encountered which aims to build a concept of intercultural communication between foreigner and local painters’ communities in Ubud Bali. To answer the problems that occur, in this paper uses descriptive qualitative method with a case study design. The techniques used for data collections in this paper is to conduct in-depth interviews and observations of intense participate as naturally as possible in order to obtain data to describe what research subjects experiencing, thinking and feeling (Deddy Mulyana, 2008:15). In this paper the data obtained will be analyzed according to the theoretical framework used, and a focus on intercultural communication outlines foreigners and local painters’ community of Ubud, which they do in their daily interactions, with the patterns of integration, assimilation, separation, and there is a tendency marginalization. Based on the results of the data analysis in this paper can be concluded that, with the integration and assimilation between foreigners and the local painters’ community of Ubud, the painters’ intercultural communication be harmonious and conducive. And the tolerance owned by their respective cultural actors, the situation separation and marginalization can be overcome by the intercultural community
